"The Brotherhood calls forth their gods and they answer. Mankind is
given the choice to join them, or perish."

Dark Adventure Radio Theatre®: The Brotherhood of the Beast is an epic tale of globe-trotting adventure inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft, presented as a 1930s-style radio drama. Dark Adventure Radio Theatre® presents the tale with our largest cast of professional actors, exciting sound effects and thrilling original music by Troy Sterling Nies. Like many Lovecraft fans, we played Chaosium's celebrated role playing game Call of Cthulhu®. Now, with the permission of Chaosium, we've adapted one of their most thrilling game supplements — Keith Herber's The Fungi From Yuggoth — into a fully dramatized 3 disc super episode of Dark Adventure Radio Theatre®.

A consultation in a Boston child-murder case leads Professor Nathaniel Ward and his adventurous colleague Charlie Tower into an investigation of a group called The Brotherhood of the Beast. They follow a trail which takes them across the world as they struggle valiantly to thwart the plans of a doomsday cult insidiously plotting the demise of mankind. Can the Brotherhood be stopped, or has an ancient prophecy accurately foretold the end of days?

The Brotherhood of the Beast is an epic adventure, filling three CDs. Inspired by the game upon which it is based, this episode features four different endings! Follow the plan of your favorite character first, and then see how the others work out. All endings are included with all versions of the show. Like all Dark Adventure episodes, the CD version includes collection of props to enhance your listening experience. They include:

  • an article from the Boston Globe about the child murders
  • a very strange horoscope
  • an urgent telegram from Budapest
  • a brochure for a factory tour of a very strange facility

All of these great extras are complemented by the fantastic artwork of illustrator Darrell Tutchton in the style you've come to know and love from other episodes of Dark Adventure Radio Theatre®.

The cover art is available on shirts and other fun merch from our Redbubble store!

    Must hear

The production level is top-notch and the voice actors knocked it out of the park! The team really went out of their way to include multiple endings and to try not to give away some surprises from the original CoC module. Good job!

    I want more Jenny

I, overall, enjoyed the audio drama tremendously. They made a lot of cuts of fluff and it’s a much more manageable three hours long versus the Masks of Nyarlathotep‘s seven hours. I particularly loved the character of Jenny who is an ex-gangster’s girlfriend and adds a lot of levity to the story.

The story suffers a bit from being too similar to Masks of Nyarlathotep. There’s an evil cult out to overthrow the Earth and bring about the end of the world. Indeed, people from the Bible Belt like myself will note that this adventure leans a bit too much to fundamentalist Christian eschatology. Which, translated for normal people, Nyarlathotep’s agent (or Nephren-Ka’s agent in this case) acts way too much like the Antichrist from the Omen movies or Left Behind versus a human in a cosmic horror story. Weirdly, I much preferred Baron Hauptman as a villain because while he heavily beats the “Dracula” drum, he actually subverts some expectations along the way.

It’s a very fun pulpy story and anyone who has read my own books knows that I love pulpy Cthulhu. There’s globe trotting, millionaire playboys, creepy cults, and heroic sacrifices. My only real regret is that it doesn’t feel very Lovecraftian. This could easily be about a Satanic cult plotting to bring about the Biblical apocalypse. After all, I’m fairly sure Cthulhu doesn’t care about who is President of the United States even if I wrote him in a couple of times.

Awesome Mish-Mash of Everything Awesome into the Ultimate Awesome

Imagine a typical Lovecraft tale put in a blender with a scoop of 1999's "The Mummy," a dash of "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow", a heaping tablespoon of Hammer Horror films, a full cup of Indiana Jones, and mix. Pour into a large glass and top it with a foamy heap of professional voices, great music and sound effects, and clever multiple endings. Then enjoy!

I was grinning ear to ear during this entire show. Keep up the amazing work!

Multiple Endings?! Replay ability?! I’m in!

You can always count on fantastic production quality with HPLHS on all their products, but particularly so with their Dark Adventure Radio Theatre productions. I especially enjoy the epic sized episodes, they keep me company at the drawing board for hours and this episode has 4 alternate endings to revisit over & over again! I highly recommend giving it a listen, that is if you don’t mind risking your sanity.
